Inflation in Germany during 1921-23 reached fantastic levels, with a loaf of bread being priced at billions of marks by the end of that era. Government printing presses couldn't keep up with the demand for currency denominated in higher and higher face values, and even the vast amounts of notgeld ("emergency money") produced by local governments and private parties didn't solve the problem.
