Help me Understand Coin Forums on the Internet

Hi guys, I'm new here. When I was researching a good forum to join, I came across lots of articles reviewing the various coin forums. But none of them seemed to mention the Collectors Universe forum (which I think is a PCGS venture?) and the Collectors Society forum (which I think is an NGC venture?). How do the leading coin forums, including this one, stack up to those, and are those primarily for folks who are fanboys of that particular grading service, or are they broader coin collecting communities? Just trying to get the lay of the land for online forums. Thanks

It is difficult to answer due to several factors such as a fair percentage of the frequent posters on here belong to at least 1 or more of the other forums. There is enough cross-habitation that what ever is said on one forum about another soon passes to all. Each has a different flavor to me. This is my home forum, but mainly because I have always considered it more balanced than the others and I prefer their rules and personalities. Don't go by what someone may say, because one size doesn't fit all. Try all, and eventually you will notice you check on one first each time. Welcome here.

I belong to six different forums and make the rounds daily on all of them. If topics that interest me are "slow" on any one forum, I can always find some activity on one of the others.

jim said it well, I've tried alot of the different forums the Ones you mentioned above both resort to censorship of anything the Moderators don't care for (such as negitive comments about the "sponcers") The thing I like most about CT is at long as you stay within the rules it's all fair game, just be prepared to defend your point of view as someone else is bound to have a different opinion. I also belong to a couple smaller forums that are much tighter groups with similar interests such as VAMWorld or earlycoppercoins. Simply find a forum with a setup you like and users with similar interests and you can't go to far wrong. Mostly remember to have fun and you can't lose :D

I think that I have been a member of all of them at one point or another. There are a few that I go to often, but this one is my favorite simply because the members are the nicest and there are experts in just about every field of numismatics. Welcome to CT.

I think I Googled "best coin forums" and variations of that and found several lists that review some of the forums out there. No one comprehensive list or review, but I think you'll find several lists and/or forum discussions that compare the various sites. I didn't save any, but they should be easily searchable. Hope that helps

Collectors Universe has the reputation for not being very friendly for newer collectors or those that don't have tons of money to spend on high end coins. Lots of long time collectors and dealers are there so the discussions are way above the head of the average collector. I lurk over there and enjoy the quality of the discussions but with my limited budget I don't think I would ever fit in there. I like Coin Talk so far, it seems to be friendly and be a place where novices (such as myself) and experts can both feel welcomed.

I am a member of several coin forums but I always tend to spend most my time on this board. I happen to like the members more & the friendlier vibe.

I belong to a few forums too but I tend to stick with CT. The others, I tend to lurk more than post. Many times I feel lost in other forums, although it may be because I'm pretty new myself.

It's not hard to have fun on most any coin forum. Always something to learn.

I got back into collecting (mostly by impulse) within the last couple of years and this is the only forum I am on or actually wish to be on from what I have heard of some of the others. The people here are interesting, friendly and kind, even though they can get snarky and nasty sometimes. Kind of like a big family. I started just after Cazkaboom and have seen him develop into a fantastic collector. I saw members kind reactions to him and to one of our European collectors who died and whose brother picked up the thread. I don't need no more.

They are all good but this one is the best. You will certainly learn more here as there are many more learned people here. And by the way WELCOME......

Some forums specialize in certain things.

In my opinion this is a great all around forum, there is a lot of knowledge about a lot of different areas of collecting here.

This is the only forum I use. Never even looked at the others. Never had a question someone here couldn't answer.
