I have several 3 pence from 1921-up, On some of them such as the 1925 NGC states that the 1925 only came in proof, from either M or SY&M, however in 1921 they stopped using the M under the date to signify mint, so I do not know where my coins were made. Does anyone know how to tell the difference? Thanks!
My understanding for the Australian 3 Pence coins is that in 1921 there are two versions to collect, one with the "M" mint mark and one without, assumed to be from the Sydney Mint. From 1922 to 1926 they were struck at both the Melbourne and Sydney mints with no distinguishing mint marks. After 1927 all 3 pences were struck at Melbourne Mint except during WWII. In 1942 and 1943 Melbourne Denver and San San Francisco Mints all produced 3 pences and are distinguished by a small "S" or "D" just below the ribbon underlining the date and in 1944 only the San Francisco Mint produced 3 pences. There are two types of 1951 3 pences, due to a request to the Royal Mint to help out with a shortage, these where the only English coins in threepence to have a mint mark, being a small "PL" found either side of the wheat stalks below the lower folds in the ribbon underlining the date. I got this info from various sources, but I think, from my reading it is fairly accurate. If I am wrong I feel confident that someone will correct me.
So there is no way to determine which ones I have? The value of one is $4.00 in VF, and the other is $19,000.00 I mean what would then stop me from just assuming they are and selling them based on that uncertainty? If I sold them for $12.00 (I have 3 in VF-ish shape) There has to be a way to tell shouldn't there be?
The one that is $4 in VF is a regular issue, not proof. This is a typographical error courtesy of our favorite coin book.
Okay so NGC/KM fails YET AGAIN, GEEZ cxomon they make how much ayear? you'd think they could provide accurate info!!! Either way I'd like to know which I have, in a VF state it is impossible to tell if a proof without other distinctive differences.....
