The local coin dealer I buy from the most recently gave me a bag of horribly corroded coins and said good luck. One of them i could read a little bit of and will try to describe it to you. I know it'll be hard without a picture but if you can give me any leads it would help a lot. Obverse: Leftward facing head. Appears to be a soldier wearing a large helmet that sticks way up. Illegible writing on both sides. Reverse: Says VICTO..... on the lefthand side. Either an SL/SI or 51/57 on the below the central design. Central design is two soldiers/women with a flame (looks like whats on the back of the mercury dime) in between them. I think it is made of copper/bronze but can't be sure. Any help you can give i thank you very, very much!:smile
I've got it! It was minted between 318-319 in Siscia under the reign of Constantine the Great. I have another one with a different reverse minted in the same place year. Several more still to look at. I'll post a pic(s) as soon as possible.
Very good! I thought you may have been describing a Constantinian coin. Check the legends on it though. At the bottom of the reverse is the mintmark. If its from Siscia, it should read something like ASIS or BSIS. You can use this website to find the precise reference number and date: http://www.catbikes.ch/coinstuff/coins-ric.htm I love it when posters take the initiative to look their coins up themselves. You made my day! :hail:
I'd been searching for a while when i posted that. I'm pretty sure they're real. Very, very worn but about 4-5mm smaller than the sizes the following link show. Mine average 15-17mm. I'll weigh them as soon as i have access to a scale that precise. Here's the site i used. http://www.constantinethegreatcoins.com/sis/ The one(s) i have is(are) on this page. They're VERY worn though. It might take a while to decide exactly which one.
