Hi, I've had this coin for 7yrs but have no idea what it is or what it is worth. I am not interested in selling (I don't think) but would like to know if anyone has seen one of these or might be able to point me in the right direction. Thank you!
It's a Masonic Penny Zirbg issued by that Salt Lake City Lodge in 1874. These pieces are very collectible, but I can't help you with a value. I would search the web for sites dealing with Masonic Pennies. You should be able to find a lot of dealers who sell these so you can get an idea of what it's worth. If it were me, I'd keep it. It's a nice piece of history. Bruce
Yes it is a Masonic penny. to be exact it is a York Rite chapter penny. the "R.A.M" stands for "Royal Arch Mason". The P.H.P is the initials of the member it was given to. It is given to a member when he completes the first degree (The Mark Master Degree) in York Rite. Where did you get it?
Thank you so much gents, you put a big smile on this face! I bought it for $1 from a garage sale. I didn't know what it was but knew I had to have it. Sincerely, Z
I am in Ca. now but acquired it while living in Las Vegas. I will update my profile. Once again, thank you!
Man, the only good thing I ever found at a yard sale was a tin box for $2.00. I opened it up after I paid and it had a handfull of 0.44 mag rounds in it ! Then the seller said the ammo wasn't part of the deal ! I just took my money back and walked away. Vegas is tough.
And the lodge was chartered in 1874 that doesn't meen it was given to P.H.P. that year. If you could find the ladge they might be able to trace who the member was.
It would be neat to connect the dots and trace back the history of this coin and come to think of it, I'd have no problem returning the coin to the descendant's of the original recipient (assuming the original owner has passed). Looking at the coin and wondering what Mr. P.H.P did to earn "The Mark Master Degree", interesting to say the least.
Well since I live in Utah, and I happen to be a Mason, and even though I'm not in York Rite. I do know the officers of the Salt Lake York Rite. I might be able to help. BTW most Masonic lodges have open house's where you can tour the temples, and ask questions. There are many lodges in your area.
My late uncle was a Mason, He never mentioned anything associated with the lodge and I never asked. I am sure it would be interesting to take a tour and ask questions, but it seems like privacy is the forefront of the lodge (but I don't know). Anyway, this is way off topic and I don't want to waste anyone's time. I am open to any new info regarding the coin but please, don't put too much of your precious time towards investigating the origin of the coin. Regards, z
I'm not quite sure what you mean by that question. So I'm going to assume it is just a literal question. No I rarely travel more than 100 miles from home and then only for three coin shows a year, CICF, The fall Dearborn MI show and sometimes the KY State show. I don't mind BEING somewhere else, but I hate the actual traveling to get there. I also do not drive, I fall asleep at the wheel almost immediately and it is often difficult for me to stay awake as a passenger.
I just got some more info on this penny. I might have been wrong on the P.H.P it may not be initials. It might stand for Past High Priest.
That's really exciting ratpack, amazing how traceable this coin is becoming... very exciting! I found a similar coin but with out the initials: http://www.fraternaltreasure.com/servlet/the-29824/ROYAL-ARCH-MASONIC--dsh-/Detail
These penny's (in one form or another) have been given to every Mark Master Mason since around 1797 when York Rite started and are still given to this day.
Just got more info on this coin. Unfortunately it's may not be good news about dating this coin. "Utah # 1 has been using the same strike since the Chapter was constituted" I'm trying to find out the number of strikes/batches that have been made over the years.
