Can anyone tell me what this is? Is it real? Looks Spanish? ...These are just guesses, as I'm not very keen on old foreign coins.... The obverse and reverse show the number 2. The size is close to a US nickel, but has a heavy metal feel/consistency sort of iron/steel like.

Yes it's supposed to be a Spanish colonial cob. Looks like it's dated 1738. If you can get better pics, closer up, I may be able to identify it and see if it is likely to be authentic. I suspect it would be the Potosi mint given the date.

Thanks for the leg-up in helping me identify the Spanish Cob.
I am unable to get a better picture. I was, however, able to do a little digging (now knowing where to look) and here's what I beleive I have...

1730-M, 2 Reales (Spanish Cob Coinage). Potosi Mint (current day Bolivia) by assayer Jose DeMatienzo under the reign of King Philip V. Est. value = $50-$100

The last thing I need to know, is whether it is genuine. From what I've read, original cobs were made of silver and often counterfieted. I am unsure if the one I have is real. Is there a way to identify whether a coin is silver or not?

BTW: For those interest in Cob coinage I found this very informative link
