I recently lit a long extinguished fire under my numismatic backside. I collected religiously as a boy, forgot about it for 30 years and recently started up again. It seems that there may be something to selling coins on e-Bay if you get a good source to buy certain things. For now, I am looking for a source to buy inexpensive mint rolls and sets and resell on e-Bay to support my habit. I am not looking to make a living but it would be nice to make a little while I spend alot. Hopefully, I am not crossing any lines here but a recommendation on where I could find cheap mint sets and rolls would be appreciated ... eBay? Trade Shows? Wholesale websites?

    Thanks in advance!

    Well sir,

Many collectors feel the bite of this bug at some point. There are NO easy solutions to buying and selling coins. Wholesale prices are only done between dealers. For collectors, buying in bulk is the best way to get good prices. Now I do not sell on Ebay, but do supply several Ebay sellers. They DO NOT get wholesale prices from my firm unless they are licensed coin dealers with a tax id number. While it may look easy to profit selling coins, I can tell you from 12 years of being in this business that it is not.

I will be the second one to tell you - it aint as easy as it seems ;) If it was - everybody would be doing it.

Now I know you may think everybody is doing it - but they aren't - at least not successfully. Sure - you can sell coins on ebay, anybody can. But the trick is to make a profit, consistently, by doing so. And in order to make a profit you must be able to buy cheaply - and that's the hard part.

Quite simply - there is no place to buy coins cheaply. Believe me - I've been looking for 44 yrs now - and I still haven't found it.

Getting started selling coins on eBay is not easy as you have already been told. From what I am seeing, it's even harder right now because of the lack of trust. With the scammers still pretty free, buyers are finding dealers that they trust and sticking with them. Although steps are being taken to improve the safety factor on eBay, I don't think we'll see significant change for a while yet - making it that much harder for new sellers, even if they're honest. You may want to consider joining WINS (an internet based coin club). You may be able to make some trades for what you're looking for (and quite frankly they're a great bunch). They have a TradingPost List that you can join. Here is the link:

Hope this helps you out. :)

An easy-going atmosphere to talk about the hobby, too.
