Are you talking about the $5 gold coin from the 1996 Civil War Battlefield Preservation series? If so, it was only sold in three-coin sets which also contained silver half dollars and dollars. There were both proof and uncirculated versions. Since they are very thinly collected (=little demand), individual coins are probably only worth a very small premium over melt, even less than complete sets.
Pix ? Broader description? I don't know of any civil war tokens of the $5 nature but I'm by no means a civil war expert. CWtokenman may be able to provide *much* more info if it is a civil war token. Again, pix -- or even a broader description may be helpful.
It is hard to know exactly what you have without pics or a good description, but it certainly sounds like a relatively recent issue. At this point, I would tend to agree with hontonai as to what the OP actually has.
