Hello, I usually only buy ancient coins, but I couldn't resist picking up a bunch of Medieval-1600's coins from Spain recently. I have over 100 I picked up, and these are some frequent types that I need help attributing. Any help is great, thanks! When I want to learn about a new area I usually buy a bunch of cheaper coins and learn as much as I can about them ;-).

Nice coins Nathan. I'm not sure if there are any books in English that delve into old Spanish coppers. Most books are centered around the so called pirate money, 8 Reales and the like.

i'm interested in this also, i just picked up a overstruck "pirate cob" coin...i'm pretty sure your first pic was the coin it was overstruck on.

Nathan, those are nice coppers, my son and I have also picked up a few recently through a bricks and mortar dealer. The style of the castle and the lion on the first coin would appear to match what was minted in the early 1600's during the reign of Phillip II. One good online reference is a Spanish website listing coins from 1514 to 1789. You don't need to understand or read Spanish to comprehend the information.

As for the other two, they appear medieval but I don't have the knowledge to help.

    Good Luck!
