Once again, on a whim, I purchased a coin without complete identification. In fact it was listed as "Unknown Greek or Roman". I have since narrowed it down to an AE 20 from Amisos, Pontos.

OBV: Head of Mithradates VI as Dionysos, wearing ivy-wreath
REV: AMISOU beneath cista mystica; on which rests panther skin and thyrsos; HTPK monogram to left, MFI monograms to right.

My problem is I cannot see any monogram. If I look real hard, I can see a shadow of a possible monogram to the left, but nothing to the right.

Any help with attribution will be greatly appreciated

You appear to be correct with your attribution. I found that this type can also have file marks, due to the need to reduce flan size. As far as the monograms in the left and right reverse fields or lack there of- I have no explaination. The coin does appear to be of similar style as those here....http://www.acsearch.info/search.htm...n=1&de=1&fr=1&it=1&es=1&ol=1&sort=&c=&a=&l=#3

but again I have no explanation for the no monograms. The could both be off flan, although I think this is unlikely, I still think you should be able to see at least part of the left one. Maybe you just don't have a "signed" copy.

When I blow the image up, I think I can see a shadow of a monogram to the left. So, what do you think is the reference for this coin? According to WW, there can be upwards of four different references.

Based on the obverse facial details, I would say from the link provided it is

SNG BMC 1208, SNG Von Aulock 59, SGCV II 3640

    the 4th one down...

I received this coin today and couldn't be happier. It is a beautiful bronze with a great caramel patina. This is my image w/o the ugly red background:

That's a fabulous piece Bing! WOW. What's the weight/size of that coin? I've got an Amisos bronze in my sights as well.
