After hours of researching my supposedly non-existent doubled die, die-clashed 1975 Dime, I've decided it's time ask the experts! I'm asking you all to please take a look at LIBERTY, IGWT, and the date for the obverse....for the reverse-can anyone PLEASE explain the odd-shaped lettering? Also, there is a raised area that coinicides with the outline of the portrait (similar to the 74D clash). There are also obvious areas of doubling present on the reverse, such as the most obvious "D" in "DIME". Is there a website that I'm missing somewhere? I've searched The Authoritative Reference on Roosevelt Dimes, Cherrypicker's Guide, and Strike It Rich with Pocket Change, as well as every other variety site and Google, and the only thing that turns up for 1975 is the no-S proof (don't I wish). I'm new to attributing Roosevelt's but this simply doesn't seem to exist. I was originally excited about finding not one-but TWO 1970 No-S proofs, but I got so sidetracked by the odd lettering, doubling, and clash that I forgot to take pics of them and will do that in the morning. I've been hoarding all of my older dimes for quite a long time so I had a pretty big stash to start going through! There are a lot of pics to show all of the areas so I will have to add them in more than two posts. Thanks all-I'd love any info you guys can help me with! Most importantly-what's up with the reverse lettering??
BTW I realize that I sound like a cheerleader that downed too many espressos, but I have been at this for awhile between research and pics so I'm a wee bit over-tired at this point...At least no one can legitimately say PMD is the answer LOL
Ok, I'll take a stab. The doubling in the date and in LIBERTY is definitely machine doubling. Note the inside tops of the E and R... tell tale machine doubling. Can I get a better pic of the word GOD please? Maybe it's a little bit of both... a doubled die that is also exhibiting machine doubling.
Thank you Lost Dutchman, and I'm working at getting better pics of God and Trust. I was afraid it was MD, but it was best looking MD I've seen since the 1955 poor man's doubled die. Any thoughts about the reverse? The shape of the lettering has me stumped... Lincolns, Ikes, and Mercury Dimes are what I know best, but I'm trying to learn more about these. Thank you again, and I hope to have some clearer pics up soon.
It's my opinion that the distortion in the lettering is a direct result of an old worn die that experienced some machine doubling.
......... I just had a quick question I actually have a 1975 it looks like double die I don't know much about coins but the coin itself looks aluminum on the back if that makes sense it was clearly not stamped straight
And also please note that it is impossible for any site or list or book to have every single error coin ever struck at any mint. Most die cracks, die clashes, etc. are not listed.......
It has a past life as a Mercury dime. The date isn't ddo it's a date over a date. On the obverse you can clearly see the hatchet. The color of the dime well seems much older than 1975 and it does seem to have an off color to it. But very well could be 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper if I am correct and it is a Mercury dime.
