Here's an oddball I found in a roll recently. I'm still learning the Kennedy Half dollar varieties but I do know that there weren't any 72D struck on silver. We measured it with micrometers and the width is normal except for being a hair thicker on one side (more below). I did the tissue test to check for composition because this coin has consistently weighed out at exactly 11.5 grams after approx 100 weigh ins over a few days but it looks gray. The reeding is in good condition without any wear or damage and is normal color. There is an odd area from "In God" all the way to midpoint of "I" and "B" sandwiched between the rim and reeding where there appears to be a raised lip. The rim looks identical on the reverse from the "IT" in UNITED to OF. There is some minor doubling on most of the obverse, best seen in the G of "God". Could that raised lip be something wrong with the seam or be enough to increase the weight? Its a circulated coin that I got it in a roll from my bank. Anybody have any suggestions on what would make a normal-sized coin weigh so far off while being the correct metal composition (conveniently 11.5 lol)?

Do you have a pic looking at the rim? Do you see the clad layers?

I should have that up soon (i could only post 5 pics above) but it's typical clad edge. One side is heavier in the silver color and the other side heavier in the copper color but nothing unusual that I have seen yet.

Isn't the correct weight 11.34 grams? I'm not sure of the accuracy of your scale (and does it read to two decimal places?), but a reading of 11.5 doesn't seem that far off to me. Maybe have it weighed on a certified scale at the local jewelers might help ease your mind. I see nothing unusally from the pics you've posted.

Yeah the normal weight is 11.34, and every other half dollar has registered on my scale as 11.3. or 11.2 on the really worn ones. The scale only has the one decimal point but I use it about a hundred times daily on cents, Ikes, and half dollars and this is the first time a coin has come up over weight repeatedly.

Its just more of a curiosity than anything. I figured someone would know it had to do with the core or if it's the outerlayer. As happy as I may get with a fun find, I'm not screaming "Holy Grail" or anything.

I just found a similar coin. I notice the overse top layer is thicker than normal. So is it silver or not?
