Recently a friend gave me an old (no date & about 36 pages) 3 x 5 coin book by RUD. KOHLER of 70 Fifth Ave. New York City. It has a price index that they would pay for coins. As an example ... 1822 half eagle gold coin they will buy for $100.00 and sell for $ 150.00 .... NICE huh? My question is, is the book worth anything ?? I tried googling with little to very little success. I Know old RUD had quite a collection but that's about it.:desk:
Look it up on the out of print book sites and you'll find out what it's worth. And yeah it is nice, proves point I have tried to make many times. Back then dealers marked things up 50% or more. Today they mark up 20% for the US market and people complain. They ask for the good old days to return. Problem is, they have forgotten what the good old days were really like.
You said a mouthfull Doug with a J (haven't called you that in a while) I sell a lot of "small" stuff on the side. Work on 10-15% very often. Bigger stuff I want a whopping 25-30% as I have to put the money out in the first place. Back to topic though. Treashunt might be helpful on this question. If he doesn't show up I'd PM him. clembo
Good morning, Clembo. Craig: As far as most of these old price lists go, there was one company that produced many of them, and then the dealers could just have their names added to the cover. In this instance, I would have to see the book, but suspect that it is one of those. Unusual to find a 3X5 book, [most are a larger format, and usually the other direction: that is 5 inches high by 3 inches wide] but still most of these, if in very good condition would sell for from $5 to $10. I would like to see a picture if possible. Also, be aware, there are many reprints of these early books, but I suspect that this may be an original. The reprints are usually of the better known ones.
Thanx Clembo Thanks alot for that info on the little coin book. Just now I don't have the scanner to post a pic of it. Sometime when I get to city of size I'll pop into a coin shop & let them see it. Right now we are in a desert in New Mexico with the largest town nearest us is Carlsbad (no coin shops there). I am an RVer & I travel all over, that is when the price of fuel lets me. With all the oil wells around us you would think it cheap here, not so Diesel going for $4.75 a gal. My rig holds 150 gals. Here I sit for a spell. Sorry to get side tracked but I want to Thank You again for your effort on booklet price. Old times In 2000 the year my father passed away. We were having breakfast together one morning at a dinner. A man next to him complained about cars, and they did not make them the way they use to. He looked over and said , " I am glad they do not " . He went away after 90 years of smoking and having his one drink of Bushmills in his coffee in the morning. His Aunt who was twelve years older lived to be 99 with out a bit of alcohol or smoke.
