Going through some coins today and came upon this 1979 Kennedy half. Weighing it on the scale revealed 11.43 grams. I calibrated the scale so I'm sure it is correct. All others I have from that year range from 11.19 to 11.28. I also noted on the rim the copper is quite inconsistent and streaked. My assumption is they did not get the composition of metals correct for this planchet. I'd be interested to hear other ideas.
The normal weight should be 11.34 Grams. I can say yours falls within weight tolerance. Maybe just a tad bit rolled thicker than normal.
If they didn't get the composition right on your coin, then they would have screwed up on the entire roll from which the blanks came. Doesn't that roll of coin metal weigh a couple of tons? That's a lot of coins, and you're the only one who found one. Chris
