Been brushing up on show etiquette, but I didn't see anything on the use of a digital camera at a show. Normally I take my camera with me when I'm shopping for anything out in the big wide world, but it seems like a coin show might be a little different. - General pictures of the activity ok? - Seems obvious to ask a dealer's permission before photo'ing anything they have, but does anyone ever take coin or case photos at a show? - Seems like it would be a waste of time anyway due to light issues. (I can barely take good coin pictures at home in my controlled environment) - Seems like it would make dealer's nervous. Thanks for your thoughts.
Most shows do not allow it on the floor. Usually a sign at the entrance saying not to. At least from my limited experience that is.
Though some of the dealers like Charmy will take photos at most shows, it isn't advisable for the customers unless, of course, you happen to know some of the dealers. The problem is that the photos can be taken by someone to ID a dealer and his inventory once they have left the show. I don't think I have to tell you what could happen. Chris
I can't remember ever seeing anyone taking pictures on the floor. I'm assuming there is a reason for that? I don't recall seeing signs about it at the shows I go to, but its probably frowned upon. Just guessing here though.
I've taken a few photos of dealers that I know, but trust me, I've had a lot of other dealers give me nasty looks when I did. Chris
Sometimes security will remove people trying to take photographs. Charmy gets around this by being extra nice. - Ian
I agree she is extra nice and if one checks normally the people she shows are forum memders that I'm sure she had permission to show.
Thanks for the tips! Back from the show. I had my camera with me, but the urge to take a picture just didn't strike me. It seems like it would be cool if somebody did a video show report, but I think this one is pretty much the same people every other month. Cameron (Now I need to post my show notes and acquisitions!)
For the record, I have always taken a camera to coin shows. Never once have I been told they were not allowed. But - I never took pictures of anyone's coins without asking their permission first. I've never been denied that permission either.
