So I am looking to buy a Morgan (1883-CC) and it's slabbed by PCI and I don't know if I trust it, it seems to be okay from pictures but I am not as adept as some of you at this.
Are you buying it in an off brand holder because you intend to try for an upgrade with one of the more popular grading services? Do you collect a lot of Morgans so you are familiar with grading higher grade coins? Is the seller someone you know and trust? Perhaps you can explain why you are pursuing this particular coin. james
That heavy scrape from the Ms.'s cheek though her ear would likely prevent that coin from straight grading at any of the better TPG's. When a coin of that potential value is graded by a ABC TPG it is always questionable to me. (No additional charge for the rhymes)
It doesn't look right to me, but that's just a first impression. It's been my experience that the 1883-CC Morgan is the most common CC Morgan of them all. I don't see a reason to buy something that makes you uncomfortable. I have a couple of them. I won this one for a FUN exhibit I entered in 2014 I have this one because I wanted something in GSA holder with the box.
Agree. You can trust PCI grading as far as I can throw an elephant, but I believe at least they got the genuine part right. PCI is the basement chemist go to grader for artificially toned coins. There are tons of GSA hoard Carson City Morgans for sale (1882-1884) and most grade between MS62 and MS64 as an afterthought. They are safe bets and go on a daily basis between $280-365 all day long and twice on Sunday.
Is that the gold box PCI you posted on Reddit? If so, garbage grading. Assume it's 2 points higher and possibly cleaned.
One of the members here has had a lot of PCI graded coins where the inserts have gone bad and toned the coins, and not in a good way. That is another consideration.
I’d like to see the entire slab but the coin looks off to me. It’s the most common CC Morgan. I’d be inclined by the photos you posted to look elsewhere.
Had thought of sending it off to PCGS if I got it. I have collected Morgans in the past but had to sell them to help my parents (both ended up battling cancer) had only PCGS and NGC slabs or loose. I always like a second (third, fourth) opinion on coins. Seller is someone I have worked with before. Coin was part of an estate sale and was at the time going for less than I thought it was worth.
Could you tell me exactly what you think is wrong with it so I can better understand for down the road, please and thank you!
@Vet4Coins . Thank you for your answer. I have looked at the coin but I am not all that familiar with Morgans so i would have to defer to your opinion since you have also seen the coin in hand I presume. I also have limited experience when it comes to flipping and or upgrading coins to new slabs. There are some pretty sharp people on these coin sites so who knows what you might learn. I will say these 3 things. Way more people end up posting angry posts because the grading services didn't see things their way than you see happy, happy posts. PCGS and NGC often times seem much stricter than companys like PCI , SEGS etc. Last there is a referece set of pictures at PCGS you can compare your coin to. At the end of the day it is your money so it is your choice. Best of luck no mater what you do. James
Don't know. It sure looks like it. There was this similar question posted on Reddit and there they did post the slab pic. Up thread I asked if it was the same coin posted on Reddit. OP didn't answer.
Then you mean two points lower, right? I am not an expert grader or an expert on 83 CC Morgans, but that coin is probably in the MS62 range. I can't tell about the cleaning. Here are some comparable coins: MS63 https://www.pcgs.com/cert/47483758 MS62 https://www.pcgs.com/cert/84249053 MS61 https://www.pcgs.com/cert/47364352
I meant the grade on the slab is at least two points higher than reality. The shocking thing is that with gradeflation... which of course all the TPGs claim doesn't exist... who knows these days
Very Suspect !! I was Morgan dollar collector for years until the Chinese fakes started coming in, when it comes to these people should think twice as authenticity will always come in to question.
