@Conder101 I know you had CertiGrade in your book but it was somewhat different (three lines of text on the reverse vs four...the 4th line with 'Service" wasn't on your example). Have you found out anything else about this grader since that time?
That clearly is the same company, but a variety I haven't seen, and no I have no further information about the company..
I've most assuredly heard the term rattler used to describe some slabs but every time I hear the word "rattler" I think of a rattlesnake. Too much time out in the wild seeing them. I'll never forget the first time I spotted one in the middle of the trail that my wife and I were hiking on. That was the first one she saw in the wild.
I would guess most would also think of the snake but being a coin person, I associate it with the PCGS slab. And these do rattle in the holder, thus the name.
What's interesting is that I had never seen one before and suddenly a small hoard popped up on eBay. So far 14 have sold and 9 more are still available (as of this post) and all are 1966 Balboas.
Not foreign coins, but I like to shake my Booker T. Washington .50. Look! I have a dollar! (Interesting to compare the Rattler holder with the contemporary model)
Same here! After my ex and I bought 100 acres of mixed range land and forest in south central OK to build our new home it became immediately apparent that we would be sharing it with the previous tenants; rattlesnakes and water moccasins. Once the house was built and land cleaned up the number of rattlesnake encounters went from a dozen/year to just a couple. My pitchfork came in handy a number of times and was later replaced with a 12 gauge. It was always a treat to walk into the chicken house and hear a rattle. The worse encounter was finding an 8 ft rat snake eating eggs and dealing with the odor it gave off when I disturbed it. I'm sure glad I retired to northern WI where the only dangers are FIBS and drunk cheese heads.
You've brought back a few memories. I had a small place in Louisiana. When it rained hard I had to walk down to the small pond and shoot a water moccasin that wash up from the swamps. I went to a neighbors house and I had a hard time. He caught me staring at the hole in front of his refrigerator in the floor. He used his shotgun to kill a rattler at night. And yes I had a nice big rat snake eating my eggs as well. Then I caught him one day but I had to beat him to death with the shovel that was in my hand.
Thanks for the heads up. Picked up one for the reference set before ebay can pull it for showing a grade on an unapproved grading service holder.
