I was going through the coins in my pocket to see if there was any worth saving, and i stumbled across this. Now, ive heard of companies engraving liberty bells and such on 1976 pennies, and other coins, for the bicentennial, but what about this? Its engraved with the outline of the state of Massachusetts with the state initials in the center. Im really just curious. I'm keeping it regardless, but it would be nice to know if there is anything special about it.
It's a counterstamped cent...someone added that design after it left the mint. It is not a mint error and generally is not worth a premium. Keep up the hunt!
These counterstamped "state" cents are discussed occasionally here on CT, and are normally purchased in sets of all fifty states. Here's one example: http://www.icollector.com/50-State-Stamped-Collection-of-Lincoln-Wheat-Pennies_i12000631 However, despite the "set" price, they're still worth just one cent each. Here's an older thread on the "state penny": http://www.cointalk.com/threads/state-pennies.110335/
You'll see complete sets offered on eBay once in awhile Stevenn57. Usually if you search under "counterstamp" or something similar you'll find them there when they're available. It would be fun to collect them individually too but would probably take awhile to get them all...and more expensive. Good luck! Bruce
