i bought a 1862 thaler today in a antique shop. i paid only $10 for it and its in AU condition. i tried to take some pictures but my camera wont focus on it right. it says FERDINAND SOUV LANDGRAF Z. HESSEN. on the face side of the coin. it has a shield and crown like egraving on the other side. i collect alot of german coins and this is the first 1800's coin for me. any help at all would be helpful. thanks!!!!! =)

There is a thaler for 1862 with the bust of Ferdinand Heinrich (1848-66) as `sovereign Landgrave of Hesse', issued for Hesse-Homburg.

Coins from that particular type and date run (1858 - 1863) are quite difficult to come by so if your coin is in Aunc, you did really well indeed. It has a value (if genuine) circa $60 in fine and a value in the region of $600 in Unc.

    Welcome aboard,Marksman01.The Hesse-Homburg 1 Vereinsthaler is actually quite a scarce coin.In 1858,there was only 5,000 pieces struck.In 1863,there was only 6,575 pieces struck.

i think i am going to sell it on ebay. the coin has no wear marks on the high points of the coin. you can still see the lines in the mans hair on the face side perfectly. the other side is just as perfect, virtually no wear. i dont know if i would consider it UNC or just AU. HMMM. what do you think i should start the bids of at to be fair? hey guys i love this forum! thanks again!

Sorry but you will have to do better if you are serious in selling that on ebay or whereever else especially if you are talking about a possible hundred dollar coin.

The best thing is to play around with your camera settings. In most recently made digital cameras, you should be able to find a flower sign on your camera. This means that your camera has the capability of taking pictures in macro zoom which is very essential for details. Just check if your camera does have that sign, or check your manual. It's always worth reading the manual for obvious reasons!

Taking good pictures is definitely one of the must in ebay. I was using a flat bed scanner and could only watch helplessly as my coin went for lesser price than those coins which were of much lower grade. So, taking pictures of a coin is a very serious thing... so I feel...
