i didnt think they did but they should i think they should make one for the 40th anniversary of his death next year what are your thoughts on next years commems
They minted a Booker T washington commemorative so why not a MLK? Email the mint with your good idea!
Really makes one wonder why. We've had Booker T. Washington, Jackie Robinson and Crispus Attucks on commemoratives. Seems with Martin Luther King having a national holiday in his honor a commemorative coin in his honor would be a no brainer.
Maybe it has never happened because of the personal things in MLKs life that came out after his death? Just a guess......that is the only reason I can think of and why Congress never pushed it.
Well aside from the typical cheating stories, google his name and "plagiarism." He should have been expelled rather than awarded a PhD. The info you will find came out post-mortem.

No matter what people think or say, post mortem or not the fact remains. Martin Luther King had a HUGE impact on American society as we know it.
Exactly. Jefferson had over 100 slaves and had children with some of them, but that doesn't change the fact the seriously altered American history for the better. Someone's personal life should definitely not be intertwined with them appearing or not appearing on a U.S. coin.
They recently (sometime in the past five years or so) set forth guidelines for the selection of subjects for US commemorative coins. One thing was that anniversaries should stick to 50 year intervals So the 40th anniversary of MLK death would not be appropriate. 2018 would be the proper year for an MLK coin, or 2029 for the century of his birth. The fifty year restriction is probably a good idea too since many things that strike us as important shortly after they occur often turn out to be minor events after the passage of time puts them into perspective. And if you don't set rules like that you start getting suggestions for commemorating all kinds of things and weird anniversaries. (OK, I will admit I found the 38th anniversary of the Korean war oddly appropriate, but I would have been just as satisfied with a 50th anniversary. Especially since it seems that very few people were able to understand why the 38th was chosen.)
Nice piece of information Conder and explains a lot. 38th parallel maybe? You're right most wouldn't understand.
Notice I said they were guidelines, they do not have the force of law so they CAN ignore them if they chose. When you say the 230th anniversary of the Army I assume you mean the Marine Corps dollar, unless they have something new coming up. I thought the Marine Corps dollar was a pretty stupid coin as well. Not that I have anything against the Marines, I just think the choice of what they were commemorating (The particular anniversary) was stupid. And Clembo you are correct. The 38th parallel was so intensely stressed during the war and everything always revolved around it. Even when they finally reached the truce, the boundary was once again the 38th parallel. Today no one seems to remember that (Which is surprising considering that at the time the TV show MASH would have been very fresh in peoples minds. It took place in Korea during the war and there were several references in the show to the 38th parallel.)
