I came across a 1884 Morgan dollar that is encased in what appears to be an acrylic of some type. The coin appears to be in uncirculated condition and has the New Orleans strike on it. I was curious what it might be worth and if anyone knows anything about it. Thanks for any info! Here are some pictures. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a114/Torquem/IMG_0244.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a114/Torquem/IMG_0245.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a114/Torquem/IMG_0246.jpg
Welcome to CoinTalk. The good news is your coin appears to be genuine. The bad news is it appears to have been polished. Plus it is encased in Lucite. I don't think it would be worth the effort to remove the coin from the Lucite. I would keep it as is for a paperweight.
I agree it's also a common date morgan, so it isn't woth that much money anyway. As Hobo said it does make for a very cool paper weight. -Mike
As others have already stated, I would not attempt to remove the coin from the Lucite. I would personally keep it, but if you want to sell it in today's market, you could expect to get $10-$20.
