I was up bright and early this morning with my face in the history books. I'm still working on the historical events for my new coin album. I decided that the Battle of the Alamo would be a good event for that period of time. This was an Important event so I will require a nice dollar for the year 1836. I grabbed my faithful Redbook turned to the dollars of 1836.. OPPS...! as my wallet falls to the floor and dies like a person in a spagetti western. (flops around for 10 mintues) I say to myself I really don't think I will have a Gobrecht Dollar as required coin for my collection. Gee I think the half will work fine. I'm back to normal now. I've had my coffee and my heart is beating normal. I would mind owning one of those. But then my thought got real. catman
Hey Steve, This one might interest you. Take a look. It ends in 5 hours. this is the best I can do. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11969&item=3948069844&rd=1 Sorry, a little to close to self promotion. Again.
I as a rule do not look at history before I buy a coin, but I always do after Ive aquired them. are you creating a type of coin collecting album that requires coins based upon historical happenings ? Rick
There are some excellent COPIES out there. Might fill a hole in the album until you win the lottery..
Type Album.. Hi Metalman, I have created a packaging system that allows me to write on the reverse of a 2x2 double pocket flip. So I thought it would be neat to create an album matching Historical events in the United States with the coins that were minted at the time the event occured. Putting the story on the reverse side of the insert. catman Oh... I won't have an 1836 Dollar...
For those of you who will never own one, here is a nice pic for you. Just so you know that I not self promoting again, this coin is not in the inventory of my firm.
Susanlynn, That's a nice looking half. Has nice eye appeal with no problems. That's the kind of coin I like. catman
Sorry for the confusion... Just to clear things up for the forum. The albums I design and produce are NOT for sale. I only make them for display and personal use. I will photograph one and post it later if I get approval from the forum. catman
I guess it was the fact I was a history teacher for 35 years... Whenever I find older coins in my pocket, the first thing I look for are birth dates of my family - myself, wife, kids and grandkids. I always think history when I run across an older coin. Over the past few years I have come across, and kept, coins with such dates as 1912 (Titanic), 1927 (Babe's 60th homer, Lindbergh's flight), 1945 (atom bomb, end of WWII, FDR's death), 1963 (JFK assassination). If you were to look through my several hundred loose coins, a majority would probably have a historical connection. Maybe someday I'll come up with a display which shows the coin as well as something about the historical event(s) which took place the year it was minted.
I think it's important for me to state that the auction that I posted for catman to look at is is NOT one of mine. I have not dealt with this seller though his feedback looks good and, in my opinion, I think the risk would be minimal. However, that is only my opinion. All I did was search on eBay for the coin he was looking for and post a link in an effort to help.
I watched "The Alamo" today. Turns out I do have an 1836 half dollar and a few even older ones that I'd like to think Davy Crockett or James Bowie could have spent prior to their demise. http://www.thealamo.org/main.html
