Ok, I'm new here, and I was wondering what you could tell me about this coin... like, grade, whether it's fake or not, etc. If you need better quality I can try and re-scan it later but currently I am without a scanner. Thanks for your help!!!
there is some flatness in the top of the hair, but that seems to be normal for this type. I highly doubt that it is wear. This is probably an MS coin, I'd grade around 61-62 for the obverse, and 64 for the reverse. The weight should tell you whether it is a fake, it should weigh 33.436 grams. It's unlikely that anyone would make a fake of this coin other than to pass as gold since it doesnt have a huge amount of numismatic value at low MS grades.
Howdy schroeder - Welcome to the Forum !! I'd put the grade at AU55, I don't see anything right off that would suggest it is not genuine. BUt weigh it as suggested. I'd put value at 10%-15% over the spot price of gold.
It's really hard to say if it is genuine or not from these photos. The denticles (obverse and reverse) are a little mushy but other than that I don't see anything seriously wrong. So I am thinking it is genuine (based on these photos). The coin is circulated but it still retains some decent luster. I would grade it AU-55.
It does have a dulled down look in some sections (though I couldn't see any obvious 'rub' on it). But now that I look a little more closely, the darker areas on the wings could signify wear. I'd have a look at those in determining the final grade. So I'd put the grade at AU-58 if indeed it is.
Yeah, actually, the scanner I used seemed to take a bit of the luster away from the coin... realistically it is a lot less pale brown and more gold colored than what the images show. I guess... maybe more lustrous...
If you like the coin, that's the most important thing here; value isn't much of an issue in this case because it probably wouldn't make better than 63. But, if you want the most realistic opinion of a grade, take it to a knowledgeable friend or a trustworthy dealer.
