Has this been cleaned?

Word of warning, these are scans so no luster will be seen. It has lots of luster (just like many 63+'s I've seen). Not sure if you can tell by scans but more experience people may be able to. If you care to throw a grade out there as well that's fine. Picked it up for $20 at a show. There is a little rub on her neck that can be seen in the scans. Hopefully I can figure out photography some day.

The white areas of the scan are not noticeable on the coin. Could be light reflections? Not sure.

Even harder to tell from a scan than from a photo, but I don't see any of the obvious signs of cleaning such as hairlines or dark areas inside the legend lettering, etc.

IMHO (as a very non-expert on Morgans) the price sounds reasonable for an 1890 O in that apparent condition.

I've had grade estimates, from the scans, ranging from 63-65. It may be sent in to ANACS for the heck of it this summer.

Could be MS63 or there abouts. Don't forget for a coin that is worth about $35 to $45 it may not be woth having it slabbed and graded but that's up to you.

True. I'd send it in if it was a shoe-in for 64. Working on a grading set so that would be a cheap way.

Hard to tell from a scan as it destroys lustre but I would agree that it doesn't look obviously cleaned.

Dunno too much about my accuracy in 1 point grading especially from a scan but I would hazard a 63 if it is indeed MS. The reverse is much nicer but the obverse has some unfortunate deep hits on the cheek

The coin has probably been dipped at some point but it doesn't appear to have been harshly cleaned. Looks like a solid 63 to me.

    Hi,
Sorry folks, but not MS anything. It's an XF/AU . There is apparent wear on all the hair lines and wear on the high points of the cap. I can't tell if it's been cleaned from the scan.
    Have Fun,

After comparing it to similar priced ones at the show today, I did well. Some were going for $30 (same date, mint) that were in obvious XF or harshly cleaned.

It does not seem to have been abrasively cleaned from the photo. However, it is difficult from a scan to tell if the coin has been overdipped, which would be another concern...Mike
