While going over some coins on Ebay a few minutes ago I cam across the new PCGS holder that they copied off of NGC,,,,I guess PCGS is worried that NGC is going to take alot of people away from them since NGC had come out with its new side view holder. What are your thoughts about PCGS coping NGC's holders. Is PCGS Really That Scared?????
I doubt PCGS is scared. They probably just figured it was a good idea. And it might help drum up some more reholdering business.
I like the NGC ones better then these, But as the great Picasso once said, Bad artists copy, great artists steal !
These have been around since '09, IIRC. Mostly used in Europe at that time, though. So not really new.
Yes and more use of them coming I hope. Just as info almost all coins that are now graded at PCGS's Paris office are put into the edgeview holders is what I have heard on the grapevine.
You funny fellow. PCGS certainly is not "scared" of NGC and the edgeview holder has been in use since mid-2007 which is what it was designed for. I expect that PCGS orders these holders by the hundreds of thousands and why waste old inventory on coins that REALLY do not need edge holders?
The #1 Barber Half Set that was on display at the Long Beach show was in these new edge view holders and they looked great. PCGS has been using these since the start of the Prez Bucks w/ edge lettering and has also used them on Large Cents that have edge design for many years now, so they aren't completely copying NGC. In the past I requested these edge view holders for other coins where the edges/rims matter like $20 Saints (so I can see the edge lettering), $10 Indians (so I can see the cool starred edges) and Matte Proof Lincolns (so I can see the sharp reflective rims) but was denied. I am now informed that they are using the edge view holders more and more now so maybe some day I'll get to see more of my coins I know some folks seem to think the tabs cover up too much of the coin, but that is just silly. The current PCGS gaskets used cover that same portion of the coin's rim, but it does so all the way around the entire coin. With the edge views you are definitely seeing more of the coin, but the part that is covered just stands out more, especially in a photo. But at least the tabs PCGS uses are clear so you can still see the rim through the tab. I'd get all of my coins in these edge view holders if they would let me (and I'm sure they will someday and charge me accordingly!!!!).
Both companies have copied back and forth from each other with some ideas since they opened the doors for business. At the same time they have also made other decisions regarding what they do and how they do it specifically to be different than the other. Both are business decisions. And while scared isn't the word I would use, both companies are and always have been concerned with losing business to the other as that is the very nature of business.
You're very good at it. Actually, When PCGS forst announced the First Day of Issue program, I was on it and submitted 100 coins. Each came back in the edge view holder and this was March 8th, 2007. I was always of the opinion that every presidential dollar received the edge view holder until I bought this one: Keeping in mind that the earliest a Satin Finish coin could have been released was probably July 2007 the Satin Finish Uncirculated Coin Sets were released. However, it doesn't really matter since PCGS and NGC are usually in-sync with what the Market Needs/Demands. But I do not think that either one is scared or intimidated by the other.
