I found it in a jar of my dad’s coins and obviously it’s not real but what on Earth is the point of making a coin like this?? All you have to do is look at the letter A on this coin to know it’s fake. Roman A’s looked like upside down V’s without the line through the middle. For a fraction of a second I thought I found something awesome xD
"WRL" is the giveaway. Westair Reproductions Limited. No intent to deceive. 'Filler' coins, or mementos. Also, I cannot agree with your comment "All you have to do is look at the letter A on this coin to know it’s fake. Roman A’s looked like upside down V’s without the line through the middle," because a number of my Roman coins clearly have an 'A' on them. (See photos) (Note: The inverted 'V' is from the Greek alphabet and is their 'L' or 'Lambda') Carus Aurelian
They are not meant to deceive anyone, as already advised. I wouldn't buy something like this - if I want a type I can't find/afford, I will wait, buy a low grade example or just accept the idea. A few months ago I participated in a discussion on a Facebook group. Somebody was trying to sell a similar replica. I just pointed politely. Morale - I was trying to deceive the poor man into selling me the "rarity" cheaply. I gave up.
Fictional conversation between two Romans in the time of Claudius. Cornelius: Hey Marcus! Marcus: Yeah Cornelius? C: I just found out they wronged Caesar! He didn't strike those elephant coins, or those that said he's going to be Dictator for all time. They killed a good guy! M: Huh? But I have some of those in my pocket. They're real. C: Nah, they're fake. Take a look, their letter "A"s have a line through the middle. See here? M: Ohh you're right Cornelius. So Caesar didn't strike these denarii after all. He was wronged. Then who framed him? C: Pompey of course! Remember? They couldn't get along! See, this coin of Pompey is real, look! M: But Cornelius, look, this coin by Pompey also has an "A" with a line in the middle! C: Oh yeah. It's fake too then. We Romans don't engrave the letter A with a line in the middle. M: Who told you we don't? C: Blake! I met him in the taberna the other day. M: Oh. Well I guess this denarius with our new emperor's likeness is fake too.. C: Of course it is Marcus! How many times do I have to tell you? Just look at that "A" with a strike through. It's fake! Where'd you get it? M: I got it as change at that taberna! Come on! I'm going to get my money back. C: I'm with you Marcus!
I don’t think my dad bought it. It was in a junk jar with a bunch of foreign coins of low value. Like a 1 shilling British coin from 1956 and some Mexican coins and stuff like that.
Ahem…you were saying? How many A’s do you see with a line through the middle? I stand by what I said.
You stand by what you said? For clarity, your claim is: If that is so, are the coins I posted all fake? Surely that is untrue. Simply put, there are genuine coins engraved with the letter A, both with and without lines. Do you disagree? If you do, since you made the claim, please prove it.
I just went through a couple dozen images of my coins, and I found both with and without, but in the main they were without a line thru the A
No Yes because my claims weren’t about the coins you posted. They were about my particular fake coin. Just because yours have A’s instead of upside down Vs doesn’t mean that the authentic versions of the fake I posted also have that same A. Some coins have As and others have upside down Vs.
Trouble is that people try to learn from this site, and generalisations are like fake info, like reproductions are like fake coins..both can mislead people and are a bad thing
