Sure I've heard of 'em, must be 20 found every day on eBay! Sometimes with a 1916 Merc on the other end......which you know is probably a "D" minted example. Rare coins always group with gold and end up in OBW rolls from the same seller, that's just the way science works.
Yes it did sometimes happen back in the 50's and 60's. People misunderstood the gold recall order and thought they were breaking the law by having gold coins when they inherited them. To stay out of "trouble" they would pass quarter and half eagles along in rolls of dimes or nickels, or sometimes find a vending machine that would accept them as dimes or nickels. I know a gentleman that had a vending machine route back in the early sixties and he would sometims get them in his machines. People didn't realize they were still legal tender, they just thought they were illegal to possess and didn't want to get caught with them. If they put them in rolls though they wouldn't be on the ends. They were trying to hide them. They would be inside the roll.
To add to Conder's point, they wouldn't be bank wrapped, either, since the bank would "reject" the coins for not being within the acceptable weight/measure variance, so they wouldn't be in bank rolls.
