    Hey everyone --

I have a 1987 D penny with the outline of the state of Alaska engraved on it with the letters AK in the middle. I figured it was useless and fake but I weighed it and it came in at 2.6 grams. I looked it up and couldn't find any information but saw other engraved patterns on some coins so I thought I'd ask the people who know best.

    Thanks.

I believe someone said a whole set of these were produced - one for every state. Technically, it is post-mint damage (PMD) but people do collect them.

Chris is correct.. they are called counterstamped and they did do a complete set of all 50 states along with many other designs. I have seen pipes, Presidents, Masonic Emblems, etc.. I had a bunch of them at one time and sold them for $1 each.

Most I recall seeing were dated in the 70s (not that it matters).

I have seen this before at my store in the register.... I am sure I said similar and sent it on its way. No idea that they were issued as while sets and with other pictures.... Thank you.

In the late 60s/early 70s, there was a company, on the east coast, that would make such stamps for your personal use. Some Coin clubs and dealers had them made as they were somewhat classier than wooden nickels with stamp. I was going to buy an Indian head cent stamp with initials , then 'things' changed for a few years.

Paddy - Hey. Yeah I found this one in my dad's old chest in the attic the other day and it was still attached in the piece of paper. I figured that was what the Alaska one was but a few days ago I typed in engraved pennies and there were a few worth $20 bucks, etc, but they didn't have states engraved on them, they had something else which I can't recall at the moment.

They do still make those sets. Recently a club member brought in a full set all dated 2000.
