Hi there, as I am roll searching, would it be prudent to hang on to newer cents that look fresh from the mint and 1970s - 80s coins that have very nice toning with no apparent damage? I have also been saving common cents with very sharp details and minimal or no damage. I know I should be looking for errors and uncommon dates, but if they are lovely coins, I cant help but hang onto them. What do you all think?
IMO, collect what you like. If you are pulling those coins because you are hoping for future profit, you're living with false hope. With so many of those, in the condition you describe, having been pulled out of circulation, none will ever appreciate in monetary value.
Well, I don't know if this is any recommendation, but I do it. I just love it. And that's just the way I am, and there's nothing anybody can do about it.
If you like them than keep them. Make an album or something so that you can look at them often. Being common cents it shouldn't hurt financially to hold them.
I would say yes, definitely! I actually put together a really attractive date/type set of Abraham Lincoln cents 1909-2009. And, many-in fact, most of the Memorial years were retrieved from either rolls at the bank, or were saved for me by my mother. This date/type series includes 106 cents (including the 1909 V.D.B.), and is affordable, but still a lot of fun to have.
i do it as well, i have a whitman album for cents filled with toned coins i've pulled from rolls, and cent tubes filled with "high grade" coins from the 60's, 70's and 80's, figure someday my son and/or a grandkid could make use of them in a collection or even if its to cash them in at face value..
When it comes to collecting anything, it is up to the individual to follow their own interest. Regardless of the final objective.
I think it's CENTsational! Sorry I have been waiting to say that for a long time. I think that if you have the room to collect common circulated cents then do it. How about Dimes, Nickels and Quarters.. there are a lot of lovely circulated coins to be found in those denominations also!
Thank you all for the input. I think I wont be so compelled to hang onto each and every unscathed 2015 cent I come across, but will not worry about accumulating cents with nice details either. I will be the first to tell you all, I am very simple minded when it comes to things like this!
I don't roll hunt too much, but I find a pretty high number of red '59 memorial cents. I keep them all.
