i found this in a junk bin at the bank today. it appears to be a regular old cent. but when i flipped it over, it looks a little...empty. obviously, there's something wrong here. is this part of a genuine cent, or is it some kind of trick piece? it measures the same thickness and diameter as a standard cent. as you can see, it's hollow, like an outer layer simply came off...? any ideas? probably a fraud, i know, but i wanted to be sure.
Magicians coin, or milled out to create a double denomination. Very common, magicians use them to hide things inside to perform their tricks, and others are milled that way and a dime is milled to fit with it to create an eleven cent coin. Both are PMD. Chris
that's kinda what i was assuming. it's pretty interesting though. the detail on the reverse seems too good to be a fake coin, so i would assume it's been milled out of a genuine cent. a dime fits too loosely into it for me to think it would be done for that purpose though. either way, it's something i didn't have before. i'll probably keep it. thanks!
Yep it was lathed. It looks like it had something glued in there that fell out. What you need to do now is machine an obverse of a 1958 Lincoln to fit and you'll have an instant ebay treasure............. I joke of course.:smile
I know you're joking, but, sadly, it's true! More sadly, though, is there are some suckers that'll scoop them up thinking they have found their retirement coin.
