My father recently showed me a coin he had my stepmother's stepfather who passed away several years ago. The coin to me seems quite odd, and I'm not too sure of what it is exactly. The date is 1987 in roman numerals, which is where I'm confused. Aren't all eagles numerical dates besides the really early releases? Here's a pic, sorry so blurry. Anything anyone could tell me would be really helpful. Bill
Hi Bill.. not an odd coin at all. It is a $5 American Gold Eagle. The Roman Numerals appear on the coins from 1986 thru 1991. It is a bullion coin and since it is a early date some collectors pay a little more than bullion for the roman numerals. I would expect around 80.00 to 90.00 RAW. BTW it is not a half eagle..a half eagle is a $5 coin from the (1795 thru 1929). AGE were/are made in 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and 1oz sizes ranging from $5, $10, $25 and $50 coins. If it were graded by PCGS or NGC and it was a high grade like MS 69 it would go for 100.00 to 110.00 Happy New Year!! RickieB
