I recently aquired a gold coin. It is a California Gold Half Eagle minted in 1857.
Could someone please tell me what this is worth?

Could you post some photos...the coins you are talking about are faked A LOT...so I wouldn't want to say what its value would be without knowing for sure its real.

I could have sworn I responded to an almost identical posting about a California quarter eagle yesterday, but anyhow [IMG] to CoinTalk boss.

As Speedy said, you have something that is heavily counterfeited, so good clear pictures of both sides are an essential first step in trying to evaluate it. There were a number of private minters of "California Gold", but the only US Mint coins fitting that description were the 1848 quarter-eagles with "CAL"above the eagle on the reverse, which are quite valuable.

If your coin is real, or a counterfeit made for fooling collectors with the same gold content as the real ones, it is worth at least the bullion value of about $130.
