Hello @ottozim. You might be better off starting your own thread with this question; more people will see it.

I am not very good yet at identifying whether or not a coin is real or counterfeit... I'll leave that to the experts. But the design is called a "Capped Bust Half Dollar" and was minted from 1807-1839.

Not to be rude , so I hope you do not get offended. They sell very nice books and magazines so you can identify just about every coin you will come across. How did you get the coin if you didn't know what it was.

The grade looks to be VF details. The coin appears to have been cleaned but otherwise is rather nice.

Thanks again! I was thinking tonight ,being very new to numismatics, the many seemingly silly to some, questions I've asked only to be answered with humorous sarcasm and interesting facts. None the less, this the best site! Hats off to you all!

And Small Letters reverse. Not to be confused with the multi-thousand dollar large letters variety.

Again, if you thought I was being rude I am truly sorry. The only reason I suggested buying magazines and / or books is that I myself am fairly new to numismatic (about 8 years ) which I have found out is like being a babe. There is so much to learn and people with the best intentions, will sometimes steer you wrong , not saying any of these guys or gals did or would. So again if you took my words wrong I am sorry. I also joined a coin club and helped one of the members at his shop he has been doing this for 5 decades and that where I found out I knew nothing.Glad you have started coin collecting, and hope you enjoy many years of the hobby.

@ottozim Buy a copy of the Redbook. A guide book of United States coins. It's fairly inexpensive and truly a 'must have' for any US collector. You could also find one in the reference room at your local public library.

I'm new to numismatics as well. My go-to website for helping me identify coins is numista.com
