I have a bunch, I have 7 that are sterling silver I think...the dates are 1968 1964 1969 I have 22 others that I don't know that are worth anything, but were in the jar with all the other coins...dates as follows 1972 1974 1983 1973 1971 1982 1976 1984 1979 1972 HELP
1964 was the last year half dollars were minted of .900 silver (not sterling). The '68 and '69 are clad with outer layers of .800 silver and a core of .209 silver. Unless they are in outstanding uncirculated condition they are worth the melt value of the silver, which is more than face value, but nothing to get excited about. These are clad, with copper-nickle outer layers and a copper core. Again, unless they are in outstanding uncirculated condition, they are generally worth face value.
A JFK hoard. Lots of them around but none worth much. To expand, Sterling silver is .925 pure. The 64 is 90%, and the others net out at 40%. The clads? As he said, unless they are spectacular in condition, they are spending money and nothing more.
Thank you for your help! I have another question...what does CLAD mean? Also, where can I go to find out what my other coins are... I have some that I can't understand the writing and some that I can read, but still am clueless,.. Thank you again! Karen
as far as your foreign coins go, I think you mentioned that you had irish, french, canadian and some japenese yen? the first three should be fairly easy to track, and see what you have, they will all use standard numeral, with an easily identifiable denomination (the irish coins may be predicimal depending on the years that you have). In any event, they can probably all be found in the Krause Standard Catalog, which you can probably find in your library. The japanese coins are a little harder, because you have to understand how they date them, and then you have to translate the numbers for the exact date. these coins can also be found in the Standard Catalog.
It's very easy to date modern Japanese coins (minted after 1867) with the help of this website. In general earlier coinage is not dated. For more information about Japanese coins, in addition to Krause you can check your local library for either or both of the primary English language books on Japanese coins - Japanese Coinage by Jacobs & Vermuele, or Modern Japanese Coinage by Cummings. Both are frequently available on eBay. For more help with Japanese coins feel free to PM pictures to me (click on the PM icon at the bottom of any of my postings).
I could not access that site. I was under the impression that you had to figure the first year (which is not dated) and then add to that the number listed in Kanji. well, if I am wrong, I apologize.
