I've recently begun searching through boxes of halves. Anything pre-1971 I automatically keep, and then for anything post I've been setting aside the best examples I come across. Originally this was to complete a set, but as many of you have probably encountered there are many superb specimans to be found out there. These may grade as MS65 or higher but are generally considered common enough (ex, 1971) to be worth not much more than face value. I was wondering how many of you set aside these kind of "specimen coins" and what dollar amount you may limit youselves to? I probably have about $225 in these kind of halves. Curious how this compares to other ppl. I'm planning to keep these for the kids. Think it will be neat in 50yrs time to see a decent collection of quality coins (even if they are common dates). Thoughts?
Keep one for each kid. Also, get cherrypickers guide to look for errors/varieties/die states (whatever you want to call 'em) before you toss the extras there are some in the early 70's. Maybe make some rolls of BU for ebay if you want.
I try to keep the best for my dansco, so when I come across a nice one I see if it is better than the one I already have in there. But I don't keep others...
I set them aside as well. Have hundreds of dollars worth. I figure eventually I might sell some on ebay or something. I scored about 10 bank rolls of 1971-Ds, which I believe to be "true BU" coins. I know there's tons of 1971-Ds in circulation, and many are in really good shape AU/BU, but these are blazing.
I didn't see any that good. If you have some BUs, put one up on ebay and see what you get for it....I'll bet it will be worth your while...
Honestly, I liquidated all my kennedys except for one 64 and one 76 for my type set. I just couldn't hold onto all those halves.
I find so many of them, if they are not better than the ones I have in my whitman than they get thrown back in for someone else to have.
Occasionally I will find an extremely good coin and I will keep it but not very often. I got a 1976 original bank roll yesterday. It looked like perhaps some moisture had damaged some of the coins because they were very spotty. I'm letting them go back into the wild. I'm only after silver now.
