Last week, I posted about buying three rolls of halves from a bank near my work. Found several silver coins, so I thought I'd go back this week. This time I bought ten rolls. Here are my results: 1936 Walking Liberty 1941 Walking Liberty 1951 Franklin (2) 1952 Franklin 1959 Franklin (2) 1963 Franklin 1964 Kennedy (2) 1965 Kennedy Eleven silver halves out of ten rolls, I think that's pretty damn good.
I stopped at 14 banks yesterday while on the road and asked to buy rolls of halves or any loose halves. Not one bank had any rolls and they couldn't even order them in. I managed to buy 2 loose Kennedys, both clad which I just tossed in my loose change jar. If they have loose halves, I just take them without examining them because I did get a Franklin, 64 Kennedy and a 67 Kennedy on previous stops. They just don't have rolls here in SE Florida it seems but I'll keep trying. Nice finds to those who got lucky ! *~*Joey*~*
All banks around here have as many halves as I want. Odd though that I've heard the same thing from others around here that none of the banks have half dollars, old large Ike dollars, $2 bills, etc. What I suspect is if they know you, you can get whatever you want. This morning I got 2 rolls of halves from a near by bank and no problem at all. Of course they were all in the 70's and beat up so bad they looked like someone used them for sandpaper. I get rolls every week and haven't found anything for many, many years in the half dollar rollls. One time for the fun of it I asked for 100 $2 bills and the teller said one moment and started to get up. I stopped her and said could you really get me that many. She said that and a lot more if I really wanted the things. Most banks have these things but may not want to have to go to a vault for them. Since such items are not common, they are probably put in the main vaults.
I Publius, That is a great result for searching so few rolls!! I searched through $500 worth today and only found 3 40% Kennedy Halves. But, I have searched through that many and found none as well.
In general I expect to get .5% yield on my searches. So if you are going to do $20 at a time I would assume that you would need 5 trips to get 1 silver coin.
My wife met a teller from a bank in a very small town near us and she said they had $400 in halves. I went the next day and bought them. I only found 2 40% halves. The teller told me not long ago a guy brought in a bunch of old coins including a bunch of Walkers but someone else at the bank bought them all. I really need to get a part time job at a bank.
I do the same thing here in Nevada (for my wife) . I found 1 '64 and 14 40% in first time at bat in $100 and 2 Franklins and 1 40% in the second batch of $80. I will order $200 the next time out.
At least you can take the coins to the casino to get rid of them. Around here you get funny looks every time you spend halves.
ok i now have a sum of $50 to go to the bank with and i have 3 options 10 rolls of nickels 10 rolls of dimes 5 rolls of halves which one should i get to get a crack at my first real find at face value. will leave in one hour.
65Gt350, I get the halves at the bank with my Safety Deposit Box and drop them off at my Savings Bank with no problems. If you want to get rid of yours just send send them over the mountain to me.
halves it is . my ride is running late. the bank will close in 30 mins. i will prolly go tomorrow but halves it is. IF i don't silver it will defeat the purpose but i was thinking i could get buffalo nickels and barber dimes but looks like there is no chance of that.
