Hi all. Just a question. I recently came into a bunch of rolls of half dollars and upon opening them and sorting through them they are all nothing but walking liberty's 1917 through 1947. Then a bunch of Franklin 1948's through 63.. (actually 2 full sets of franklin 48-63's and then a bunch of 1964 silver jfk's.. I know a little about coins and I know they are worth some money but I'm really nervous about taking them to a coin shop and getting ripped off.. My one friend took her rolls to a place and they gave her $2000 and my other friend did the same and he got around $2000 as well.. but they Sold them so quick and did no research to see what coins they actually had..I've been taking my time going through them looking and learning.. the one coin shop I did go to really low balled me and offered me $1500 and when he heard me tell my wife I wanna go somewhere else cause my friend got $2000 he very quickly all the sudden offered me $2100 like it was no big deal.. seemed very shady. Is there anything with these half dollars I should be looking out for in particular?? I really appreciate any advice or help! Thank you all!
So right off the bat the 64 jfk, unless pristine and perfect will always be considered almost like bullion, only worth it's weight in silver so today a little over $6 a piece. The franks you will want near perfect or a specific error coin to pull much more than silver spot price. The walking liberties you will want to go through dates and conditions but some of the earlier date even in worn condition can pull some premiums. Check out coinstudy.com to get an idea of what a coin shop is willing to pay. You should try to will sell them as individuals to get the best money or better yet ebay/private sale will tend to fetch the best prices. Good luck.
Thank you fblfinder for your response. I took it to another coin shop today and they did the same as the other shop. Didn't even look through them to see what years I had. They just stacked them up and offered me the bullion value.. so I walked out. At least humor me and look through them lol. When u offer me $5 a coin for what I have and I see the exact same coin in your display selling for $30-$40 it makes me suspicious!
Its just the way the coin shop keeps the door open. If you need the quick buck the coin shop always works but if you can put some research and time into them you might make more. Where did you come across this jackpot of silver halves?
A coworker brought the rolls into our work and traded them in. We told him multiple times they are worth more money but he didn't care. Said he didn't want to take the time and effort to do anything with them.
