Yes, it's an ancient fake. The term used for it is "fouree".

Pretty cool though, nice pick up :kewl:

I have seen this term "fouree" used on ebay before but did not know what it was. Is it for silver coins in general or just a denarius?

It is used for ancient silver coins. I have seen a fouree drachm and a tetradrachm.

Although, I should note, I am not sure how far it goes. I would probably assume up the end of silver denarius's...maybe even up to the fall of the Roman Empire in 470 AD. A lot of people consider Byzantine and Sassanian coins ancients (incluuding myself), I just don't know if the fakes are "fouree's", as I don't do much with either of those.

    Thanks stainless for the help.
I jump around alot in the the coin collecting venue and for the last 3 months I've been enjoying roman imperial coins of the bronze type, but now leaning towards silver imperial. Still love the uncleaned lots of bronze because I find the attributing part fun and rewarding.

    My best
