Some of you may have seen this already on this thread here. Well meet the crazy person that ended up getting it from @Brian Bucklan Oh yeah... the coin. Top Hadrian, Alexandria Tetradrachm Billon 138 A.D. / AR25 , 20.3g combined O: AYT KAI TPAI A∆PIA CEB, laureate and draped bust right, from behind R: L ∆ EKATOY (year 10), bust of Alexandria right, hair in loose locks, wearing elephant-skin headdress Milne 1158 Bottom Nero, Alexandria Tetradrachm Billon 54-68 A.D. / AR20 , 20.3g O: ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ Radiate bust left wearing aegis, date LIΓ before R: ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΦΟΡΟΣ Galley sailing right, two dolphins below Milne 273 Its my first Hadrian/ Nero/ conjoined coin, if that made any sense. And you know the rules post away any Hadrian (its going to be a long thread) Nero or conjoined coins.
∆EKATOY is ten spelled out. It is Emmett 805. For a reason I do not understand, Hadrian spelled out dates on many coins from years ten through thirteen. The tetradrachm below has ∆W∆EKAT for 12.
Those are two nice coins @icerain. I'm afraid I would be trying to separate the them from one another. Probably best I didn't get them.
Nice, wanted it myself but other coins surfaced that have and haven't been shared yet. If I got it, I would keep it together.
What a neat pair! However, I'm with Bing on this one - if they were mine I would try and separate them.
Ooh, I love the ship on that one! Has more sail area than I'm used to seeing displayed on depictions of ancient galleys. In fact, that ship looks almost medieval. I'm more accustomed to seeing the ships on Roman coins with their oars out and the sails furled- or with the masts stepped down or even seemingly absent, as on the Marc Antony Legionary denarii. (Until this thread got me to thinking about it, I was unfamiliar with this Sextus Pompey type. Wow.) I've always thought ships are one of the better numismatic themes, but had not fully considered the variety of them on ancient coins. Now I suppose I'll have to go browse the Greek ones...
Fantastic! I didn't follow up with Brian's website and missed the opportunity to own this fascinating pair I have no fused coins but do have a ton of Roman Egypt coins. I'll post a few later relevant examples later
For some reason, I missed Brian's original thread and nearly missed this one as well. What a very cool score, @icerain! Well, Nero and Hadrian were both philhellenes, so perhaps these two coins just gravitated towards each other ?
I completely forgot too, it was boredom that got it for me as I was just browsing coins all over the net.
I missed the original thread...but what a cool group of 'conjoined' coins!!! LOVE that galley sail reverse!!! I'd be sooo tempted to separate them I lack any fused type but do have a bil Tet of Alexandria with Nero/Poppaea:
Wow. Super cool. Its the kind of odd thing that I would have bought had I known about it. If others are wishing to buy fused coins, I would suggest you look out for Chinese coins. They are commonly found fused and on occasion they are sold that way. Below I have three clumps in my collection:
I really didn't want to see that coins again (singular-plural, whatever). I had second and third thoughts about selling it and will never find another one like it. Glad it found a good home though.
