Hello everyone... went to a local coin shows, and made a few small purchases, but some fun Ancients! Hopefully, I could get a little help from your "conglomerated expertise"... First up, first purchases... hidden dealer back in the corner, Fred is a wonderful guy, and we shared some war stories about our ailments we've overcome! He had these that he did not specialize in, just had, and offered me to capture them for a song... Yes, I am cliche on this, as you all been posting these here "square-type coins", but I thought they were fun: Would anyone be able to identify them and help me attribute? Oh Procopius, the ill fated scion of the Constantinian dynasty. He ruled from 365 to early 366, so his coins aren't too common. Coins of him are readily available but are a bit pricey for the nicer ones. There are some on Vcoins close to the condition of your coin that are going for $45-$55.
Procopius used to be rather rare but someone found a bunch and they are not scarce now in low grade. Nice ones are still hard to find.
Well, I like the first three coins very much, but when we talk about hockey pucks, that's not meant to be taken literally.
LOL, I HONESTLY did not have my glasses the other nite. It was getting late, and was sitting on my desk... I really thought: Rats, left my As laying out...reached over, picked it up and laughed out loud. Gave it to Blue... munch-munch
Love the carving work... looks like with all your food stuff in one of your post, and the above handiwork: you craft, cater, and collect!
I could not squawk too much today: Spent under a C-note for the 3 above, and an L Thorius Balbus denarius (VF); bored wife actually enjoyed herself with me at the show; then on a 2-hr lunch cruise for our anniversary; then to supper. Very enjoyable day!
Sounds like you all had a terrific time at the coin show...and I really like all three of your coins...and I haven't heard the term 'chiclets' in quite a while LOL Blue actually likes hockey pucks that look like oatmeal cookies??? But I will post my once scarce but now relatively common Procopius (Are right-facing busts still a bit scarce, unlike my left-facing example?):
Glad to hear that you had a good time at the coin show (fun stuff) Oh, and I love the gingersnap addition (it looks a bit like one of JA's Naboteneese gems)
As RIC was being compiled, these right-facing Procopius small module AEs weren't even recorded. They were probably minted at the beginning of his reign, struck on small Valentinian/Valens flans, before he reverted to the larger module of Julian II and Jovian and turned his bust left.
LOL, yeah! I HONESTLY did NOT have my glasses on and honestly thought I left a Roman As on my desk. Expecting some heft when I picked it up, I laughed that it was a lost snap. Blue (Avatar) enjoyed the spoils of my lost victory (no "extra As" laying on my desk...)
Hmmmmm.... So, since I really do not capture RE's, did I inadvertently "SCORE" on this capture? Is it a "rare" Righty vs now-more-common "Lefty" due to a found "bunch" as Doug pointed out?
Hm. I'm not sure about rarity nowadays. I saw similar coins to yours go for anywhere between 20 to 40$. Now if it was the scarcer SECVRITAS REIPVB, it would've commanded more. It's still a good pick up if you paid 10-15$ for it
