I recieved permission to detect this cool spot in the next county from me. An older courthouse building that is now a museum. I recieved permission all via e-mail. Had a blast today. I only hit one side of the place.

The wheat pennies where coming outta the ground like clad. I don't think this place has been detected. I found 20 wheaties with some nice early dates. This 1909 has the VDB but no S. Darn. The S mint mark played a big part in my finds.

Where there are lots of wheaties silver is not far behind. That was true today as well. A great day for silver by finding 6 of em. A Barber Quarter to boot. If it had an S mint mark it would be worth some moola. Same for the 04 dime. The S mint mark, or lack of one killed me.

Here is the backs of the two Barber coins.

Also when there is old silver found. Indian heads are lurking too. 4 of em. The 1882 is pretty nice. Has Liberty in the head band.

Here are a few neat items as well. Do you guys have any idea on what this thing is? Here is the front and back. About the size of a dime.

This thing is neat. The museum will like this one. It has the date on it which is about the time the building was built. I love these kind of finds. It is a pin but the pin on the back is missing. Pobably why I got to find it 100 some years later.

Here they all are before a cleaning. A great fun time out finding old stuff in the dirt. Jim

Not this weekend but I have permission for the following weekends. It will take the rest of the fall to cover this place properly doing it just one day a week.

Did you have to make some sort of agreement to share any of your finds with the museum? (I know that question sounds greedy, but I'm curious if there were any terms attached to the permission you received)

Yes, do tell. It would be interesting to know what their conditions are/were. Just in case any others of us want to do a similar kind of thing. Actually, I just need to learn to use it and finally get out to the park to try it out.

    Jim C,
Those are some really nice finds that you have there! You must feel very happy. I specially like the Indian heads.
I know the feeling, i have done a lot of detecting over here myself, over the last 15 years. And i just bought my son an ACE 250. He has already found his first 3 silver coins in a woods right behind our house.
I would really like to see some of the older finds that you have made. Maybe you have already shared that in the forum? and just point me to it please.
wish you many more good finds!

The agreement is to let the museum keep anything found of historic significance to the museum. The coolest thing found for me was the rally day pin which dates to the musuem/courthouse days. I have already mailed this to the courthouse/museum folks. After I do all my searching which will probably take most of the fall to complete. I will take everything found and present it to them and hope they will let me keep some of the nicer coins. (they usually do) I'm sure they will take a few of the coins that date to the building but I believe there are many more there to be found. Of course anything that pertains to the building will be mailed out to them when found. I love finding the odd ball stuff like the pin and token along with the coins.

We each win. I get a few old coins, (they usually don't care about the coins much) maybe more. They get some cool things that relate to the building. I have never had a place take all the coins only some that relate somehow to the building. I have done this at a few other musuem/houses in my area. Works out well for both.

Only hard part would be if I found a gold coin. Never have but that would be a tough call. Jim

Wow! Those are some really nice finds! Please keep us updated!!

I am currently torn between two things, a new digital camera or a metal detector... I know this one little eight-year-old girl who lives near a civil war site, she got a cheap metal detector, and dug up a whole bunch of pistol and musket balls.
