Hi there, New to the forum so hello :kewl: Looking to see if anyone knows anything about this coin that has unfortunately been turned into some sort of brooch. As far as i can see it is possibly a guinea going by the size but i believe there should be a toothed rim for this type of coin. The diameter is 2.5cm and it does have a nice goldish colour. I have attached some pictures Thanks McLean
I think it's a genuine gold guinea that was unfortunately turned into a brooch as you said. The jeweler may have smoothed the edge at the customers request or to simply add a little gold to his scrap bin. It's lost at least half of it's numismatic value but there would be plenty of people willing to bid on it if you list this on eBay.
Hi hiho, Many thanks for your reply. This seems very plausible indeed. My estimate is that it would be worth around £150 as gold if i sold it to one of these many gold shops that are appearing by the day over here in Glasgow. This is taking into account the loss of gold that has been scraped off. My worry is that if i do that i am destroying a piece of history that someone somewhere may have an interest in. If i sold it on Ebay would i get a similar value for the item or less? I realise this is very hard to put a price on but would you have an estimate that i would reserve the item at if i were to sell it? Thanks again
one dont go to thouse type of shops they never give you near what it is worth this coin in a fine grade is worth £400 now minus the ex jewelery less £100 = £300 this is my op hope this helps dave
It think you would have to take off more than that. The mounting isn't exactly what I would call 'sympathetic'. It looks like the pin mechanism was soldered onto the reverse, essentially ruining most if not all of the numismatic value of the coin...
Thanks for your opinions guys, i really appreciate them. Unfortunately i am still at a loss as to what to do with it
