Ditto , lot's nicer than the 3 '84s I bought in the '70s . Heck might even go 66 if the luster is booming . But if the luster is impaired it might only go 64 . Nice coin !!!!!
(OP) On a bender over the weekend Frank.?......... How's Tax Time? Did mine today. Now I see why you're so grumpy this time of year.........
Sorry for the delay. Thanks for responding with your thoughts. It's currently graded at 64+ from PCGS, but I sent it in thinking at least a 65, with a high possibility of getting Proof Like (PL). I was disappointed in the 64+ so I sent it off to NGC for crossover and regrade. Fingers crossed.
It will probably not grade higher. I said 65, but a 64+ is high in grade, and virtually a 65. No good reason for NGC to upgrade, as it is well within the standard error of measurement-- 64+ to 65.
No way that coin is proof like based on those photos-- just another nice Morgan with good reflectivity.
I would be shocked if it didn't cross at an upgrade to 65. I can see why it wouldn't make PL or DMPL, the cameo has too many breaks. But it is pretty friggin' nice!! I was on the fence of grading it 65 if not 65+ for what appears to be very clean and clear fields. Some of the scaring on the face could be due to the die state? I was thinking possible break up of the frost on the die, since it was so fragile to begin with. But that is just my guess. I'm just starting to learn about Morgan Dollars.
NGC called me and gave me a little information that I was not aware of. Apparently, they will not cross a Morgan with the GSA designation, unless THEY are the ones to take it out of the GSA plastic. Since this was graded at PCGS and removed from the original GSA plastic at PCGS, NGC would not keep that designation on the lable. After a lengthy conversation, I opted NOT to have it crossed over and will simply have a 1884 CC GSA 64+ PCGS coin.
