Well I hope my pictures are OK on this beautiful piece - Awesome tone & a nice strike highlight this 1915-S Panama Pacific Expo Commemorative Half Dollar So what did the TPG grade it as ? What would you grade it as ? Also if it were in a NGC slab would it have gotten a star ?
I don't know much about the grading scale for commemoratives, but I'd say it's a 65 in a PCGS holder. I'd say it would probably get a star if in an NGC holder.
I don't like rainbow toned coins. But I'm prepared to make an exception in this case. Absolutely eye-catching.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say its a 66, and no on the star. Despite the one or two small nicks I see, there is also a beautiful relief and such high details, it seems to be so sharply struck that NGC might go 65*.
So what did the TPG grade it as? 66 What would you grade it as ? 66 Also if it were in a NGC slab would it have gotten a star? NO
WOW! NICE COIN.... Lehigh96 will be all over that. Is that for your personal collection or is this something that you just happened to acquire?
Jason, do you know what I think would give this a NGC star? It's the "balance" in the toning. I pay attention to that. And this toning is exceptionally well-balanced, IMO. Can't say that at all for every toned coin I see. If overall eye-appeal is the mantra, just look at how gracefully your eye moves through this "work of art." Doug has an Austrian Maria Theresa thaler restrike (I believe he said it's a restrike) that has the same graceful attributes, and that I can still look at all day long, and get "lost" in. I think everything else about this piece screams 66. I'll call this piece a PCGS 66, and a NGC 66*. Very nice!
Wow! I won't even attempt to place a grade on it, but it looks great nontheless!! Better put that away before Lehigh forms a posse to aquire it. Guy~
I don't see any marks on it, there is so much detail it's kind of hard to see. Unusually attractive toning. I'll guess PCGS-66, NGC-66*
67 and maybe 68, depending on how good the luster is and how bad the mark on the arm is. All IMHO...Mike (who doesn't know a commemorative from a hole in the ground)
p.s. does the holder have some haze or spotting on it, or is in on the coin? specifically, around the PANAMA on obverse and UNITED on reverse. If so, could downgrade to a 66.
