Hey guys. This bust hafl came with the attribution O-105, R4, but after looking at it, that is very obviously not correct. I have never had such a hard time attributing a bust half, but I can't figure this one out. I'm thinking either 114 or 115, but neither of them match - I actually like the obverse of 114 matched with the reverse of 115, which is not listed. I like the obverse of 114 because there is a chip in the upper loop of the 3 in the date, and the spacing of the date matches, as well as the placement of the star. The reverse of 115 makes the most sense because of the placement of T/I, D/E, and the 50 C. Its still not a perfect match, the bases of AME don't seem to match, and its obviously a much later die state. So, help me out! I'm trying to decide whether or not to return, keep, or sell this coin, but I can't do it until I have properly attributed the coin. Oh, the slab says PCGS XF-45, Small O if that helps.
Has anyone ever published a "quick finder's guide" to Overton varieties a la the "quick finder's guides" in the Half Dime, Noyes, and Reiver books ? What a pain to have to search bleary-eyed through each page.
Yeah, I'm leaning towards 115, but the die chip in the 3 isn't mentioned at all, which is what had me questioning it.
Yep - it is not mentioned, but on the ones where it is mentioned it just does not line up at all. Maybe this is just a really late die state - I can't say for sure.
Could it be a counterfeit? I think there is a book out there about capped bust halfs counterfeits, they were pretty common back when capped bust halves were circulating.
I had considered that, but if its counterfeit, its a damn good one. PCGS slabbed it with no problems (although, of course, the slab could be counterfeit too!) Or it could be a new, undiscovered variety and I hit the jackpot *fingers crossed*
You can always post it on coinzip and see what they have to say. It would be cool if it was a new variety.
Several of the guys on the NGC board say its a late die state O-115 as well, so I'm thinking that must be what it is.
