Over the past couple of years, I've cherrypicked a few coins that I think have a good shot at being PL. Well, the time has finally come to submit and see what I got. These are going in the mail tomorrow, but in the meantime, lets guess what NGC will call them. Because these were all cherried from dealer's albums, the cost of the coins was basically nothing - and all I have to do is hit the PL on one of them to pay for the grading fees. So, guess away! I'll post what I think later. (Obviously, the Walker is not PL - she's just a luster-bomb that I also picked up).
'65 on the Walker, '64 on the 70D Kennedy, '65 on the 68D (2nd one), '66 on the first 68D. '64 on the Jeff because of that nasty nick on the column (Reverse). The obverse of that coin is glorious!
> A 1943-S Jefferson nickel. > A 1968-D Kennedy half dollar. > Another 1968-D Kennedy half dollar. > A 1970-D Kennedy half dollar. > A 1943 Walking Liberty half dollar. I like the Walker the best. It will grade the highest. Chris
is there anything that can be done prior to submission to "help" the reverse of that jefferson. i know the grading companies clean up hazed proofs. anything specific to removing hazing in the fields? aside from that, all those coins look great. what's funny is i went through the images going no, no, NO, NO and the reason for that is I had CAMEO in my head. so if i was subconsciously fooled into thinking i was looking at non cameo proofs, I'd say you have a decent shot at PL on these business strikes. LOL need some afternoon java.
Thanks for the guesses everyone! For the record, here's what I think: Jefferson - 65PL 68D #1 - 64PL 68D #2 - 65PL 70D - 64* with a 50/50 shot at PL Walker - 66 (I don't think it makes 67, but that would be nice)
Walker 66 nice coin the rest I don't care about the series I'm gonna say 65 On the Jeff 64 on the first half and 65 on second. To me there spending change
1943-S Jefferson Nickel: MS66* 5FS Both 1968-D Kennedy Halves: MS65 PL 1970-D Kennedy Half: MS65* 1943 Walking Liberty Half: MS66+ I think everyone is being to harsh on the Jefferson Nickel. It looks full steps to me, and the obverse looks clean enough to carry an MS66 grade. NGC is forgiving of field distractions on the reverse if the obverse is very clean. I have never seen a PL Jefferson but I trust Jason's eye so I hedged and gave it a star. The Walker is dynamite and I hope you get a 67.
I mailed the package Monday, so the answers won't be here for a couple of weeks. The 70D is borderline PL - it will get at least the Star for being mostly-prooflike, or it will actually get the PL.
I've seen several. In hand, the mirrors on the one I just sent in are fully equal to any of these. This is the one I currently own: I also own this one: And I've handled this one:
No guesses on the grades, but your pictures really show up the die polish lines on those potential PLs.
I got the grades a few days ago, and I'm kinda disappointed: Nickel: MS-65* 5FS 68D #1: MS-64 68D #2: MS-65 70D: MS-64 PL Walker: MS-65 I really thought at least one of the 68D's would have gotten PL (or a star at least!), and I really thought the Walker was 66! Oh well....
