Guess the grade?

I don't see a subforum for that, so I'll ask here. I'm not getting this graded because of the obvious reason. Just looking for opinions and learning how what graders are looking for. I posted this in introductions but not a great deal of traffic there. My first CC Morgan, had to have one to go with the other 500 raw "not CCs" silver dollars. I've look at graded coins and it seems the grading services are all over the place, it's like Forrest Gump, you'll never know what you'll get, like a box of chocolates. Frustrating. 1882 cc.JPG 1882 cc reverse.JPG 1882 case.JPG

Around a 63 ...and you are correct that it is not worth getting grading (an MS 64 grade would get you a little better than break even after all the fees; it would have to go 65 to be worthwhile and that seems unlikely). It is a nice coin to enjoy as-is in the GSA packaging.

I feel that the coin is a 63.

Thanks. That would have been my uneducated guess if not for the acne on the cheeks. :(

I'm still learning myself, but the things I see that make me conclude it's MS-64 is:

    1. I don't see wear, not AU

    2. the fields don't have many contact marks and no large deep scratches, better than MS-62

    3. too many marks, especially on the cheek to be MS-65 or higher

    4. the obverse grade in my opinion is a higher end MS-63 and the reverse 64/65 averaging both sides and the eye appeal and luster I conclude MS-64

Strong strike but as mentioned above there are a few distracting marks in the focal areas and fields. Even so I'd go 64.

Thanks for the replies. I was just looking for a fair price on something I wanted to add to the collection, nothing more, not looking to sell. Paid $350 including shipping, so I think I did okay?

That seems to be close to the going rate nowadays.

Not sure what that is around the collar ?
and a few contact marks around the face
but over all a nice coin based on its brilliance will go MS64

My Morgan grading skills are abysmal so I won't embarrass myself. You did pay a fair price and those GSA Morgans are special (to me anyway).... Did it have the box and certificate? Those tended to get lost over the years with many of these GSA Morgans. The box and certificate make them a tad more desirable.

It had the slab, the box, and COA. There is a better coin in the same year and mint on auction now that is a LOT nicer but without grading, slab or GSA papers. Still a few days left on auction and bet it will go for a good sum MUCH higher than what I paid. I'm not chasing those kind of deals but I'm watching. Eye candy!

Awesome!! Back in the 1970's I was a very poor kid but loved my coins and my granddad bought me two of the GSA Morgans. I had reached coin collecting nirvana when he gave me those. I displayed them proudly and the government box got in the way of my enjoyment so they were discarded like the foolish kid that I was.... Danged if a member here, @One Mans Trash had a couple of boxes that he gave me with the COA's a while back.... Coin Talk has the greatest group of members anywhere.

Here is the coin I'm watching. I'd post the link but I think that's a rule's violation? lol
It is one I'm interested in, not one I'm selling. So no link. Current $210 but still 4 days left to bid. Lots of sandbaggers out there, no need to get excited until the last 60 seconds. :nailbiting: forum1.jpg forum2.jpg

It looks like a VAM-3, Be leary about the Gem+++.
It could grade a 63 or 64, more likely a 63. The coin looks baggy even in the bright exposure.

The lighting is suspect. Looks clean (not cleaned). I'm just watching, not buying. I would take a flyer on it at 300. But my guess this will land between 500-700 at end of auction. Photo looks good, but that can be deceiving. Love the comments, good education here! Thanks.

It looks descent for an MS coin, Just not even a PL IMO.
At $300 you would be in there at a PCGS AU55 Price point.
