I'm looking at my Coin World's book, Making the Grade

After reading the descriptions of the different grades, looking at the pics, and repeating...

    The answer IS: 55

(I hope PCGS uses the same grading standards).

What I'm perceiving as wear on the bodice might be something else entirely. MS-63.

    Dang it.

Now, will someone please explain the diff between 55 and 58 with these seated halves?

The Making the Grade book puts the diff down to words like "wear" (55) and "abrasion" (58), and the placement of the "wear" and "abrasions": "feathers" (55), versus just the high points (58).

PCGS uses it's own grading system...it's slightly different than the ANA or any other grading guide you will find. Also, grading is highly subjective...even when using the same standards. I might think something is a heavy abrasion and you might think it's light wear. As a result, I might give a coin a 58 and you might a 55.

    Aw, man...

But there has to be a CONSENSUS on the definitions of "break in toning," "abrasion," and "wear."

    uh...doesn't there?
