Guess the Grade -- or rather, guess its "Market Acceptability"

?

What did PCGS define this coin as?

  1. Genuine - Questionable Color

    45.5%
  2. Gradable - (Market Acceptable)

    54.5%

    Hi all,

Here's an interesting GtG. Rather than guessing the specific grade, guess whether this coin was even graded by PCGS. The coin is a proof and has rather wild toning, always making it dubious whether it will "fly" with a top tier TPG; especially PCGS. If you believe the coin graded with PCGS please denote whether you think it graded RD, RB, or BN. Keep in mind the series, year, and type of coin when considering its "market acceptability". (Note: None of the photos have been edited at all. I apologize for the horrible photos, the slab has a few scuff marks and photographing toned proofs is always tough business!)

I've seen purple like that on nickels of the same date. I think it is okay so I voted market acceptable also.

It does not look like MS70, so I think they graded it. And they probably called it brown.

I'm on the fence with this one too , they probably graded it Brown . But you never know what the tpgs will do with colorful toning . IMHO

I'll guess it graded and got an RB.

The pink/purple on the reverse is usually a color I stay away from cause it is often AT at least on silver coins. I do see a progression though. I'd have to see it in hand to be sure but I think it is okay as well.

aren't 61 proofs known to be the most variable toners in the series?

I'm not a Lincoln cent collecter so I haven't really ever come across that, but it definately wouldn't surprise me. I collect Jeffersons and the proofs from the late 50's and early 60's are really wild.

    Not sure, I'm 60/40 that it's questionable color (??)

Had to play it safe - so with questionable pictures I went with genuine. And yes I know you did the best you could. You might want to move the lights to where they do not reflect off the holder and coin.

I will be the first to say that I do not know copper coinage, as I have not collected them seriously since I was a kid. The toning looks artificial, so I will say "genuine." Bet it was graded, though.

As of now, the polls are an even 50/50! I'll be ending the poll and post the results this Sunday.

Thanks for all who have commented and voted so far!

This one is a toss up, the TPG's do let some toned, modern Lincoln proofs though. I've owned a few 1970-S LD's that were spectacular. The one in my collection now is PCGS, but I'd had other toned proofs in NGC and ANACS slabs too.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but slabbed toned proofs are just cool IMO. Here's an NGC 66 CAM I wish I would have kept.
