Here's a beautiful 1921 Peace Dollar in a PCGS holder. I'd just like some opinions on what y'all think the grade of this coin is. Though this coin does have a fairly weak obverse strike, I'm posting this thread because I believe the grade PCGS has designated it as on the slab is far from accurate. Please reply- all opinions are appreciated! Also, I'm not sure that it matters, but I don't personally own this coin- It's a friends. I will reveal PCGS' grade after 10 replies have been submitted. Thanks in Advance, Brian
Agreed. 64. Chatter on cheek, reed marks on neck and weak strike (even by 1921 standards) keep this from 65.
Personally, I'd call it a 53 or a 55 based on those pics. As to what PCGS called it, 63 wouldn't surprise me.
I gotta think that even for a peace dollar that hair looks way too much like wear to give that coin an MS grade, I say 58
The hair is virtually always weakly struck on this type and doesn't really factor into the grade, IMO. I guessed 63. By way of comparison, here's my NGC 58 [CAC rejected]:
Ya know what, I ignored the hair too - even though I do think there is wear there. But it was pretty hard to ignore the wear on the cheek and in the fields That thing should be graded a low to mid AU, but given as it's a '21 - not a chance.
MS63 '21 Peace Dollars RULE! I've seen PCGS certified mint-state state examples that look worse than your 58 !!! ... Now this baby is mine.
G, I agree with you, and would much prefer the coin in an AU holder. Alas, today's TPGs don't agree -- although time will tell on this coin in particular, and 58 certainly doesn't seem to be out of the question given the photos and apparent wear pattern.
So have I. Frankly, I was a bit surprised at CAC rejecting the coin @ 58. I also paid STRONGLY for the coin from CRO. However, opinions are subjective and in the end I'm happy with the coin and the grade (and I like your coin and the OPs coin too!)....Mike
